Description

A delightful homemade bread infused with garlic, herbs, and melty cheese, perfect for pairing with soups or salads.


Ingredients

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 2 tablespoons mixed herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)
  • 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
  3. Add yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Knead until smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour in a warm spot.
  5. Gently punch down dough and roll into a rectangle.
  6. Spread minced garlic, herbs, and cheese over the dough.
  7. Roll the dough tightly into a log.
  8. Place rolled log in a greased loaf pan and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and brush top with an egg wash.
  10. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Allow to cool before slicing.

Notes

Make sure your water is warm but not hot; overly hot water can kill the yeast. Experiment with different flavor additions like olives or sun-dried tomatoes.
