Ingredients

- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 2 tablespoons mixed herbs (oregano, basil, thyme)
- 1 beaten egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
- Add yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Knead until smooth, about 5-7 minutes.
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour in a warm spot.
- Gently punch down dough and roll into a rectangle.
- Spread minced garlic, herbs, and cheese over the dough.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log.
- Place rolled log in a greased loaf pan and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and brush top with an egg wash.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. Allow to cool before slicing.
Notes
Make sure your water is warm but not hot; overly hot water can kill the yeast. Experiment with different flavor additions like olives or sun-dried tomatoes.
