Description

Craft nostalgic pop tarts from scratch using a delightful sourdough twist, filled with your favorite jam.


Ingredients

  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup fruit jam or filling of choice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (for icing, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the sourdough starter, flour, cold butter, salt, and sugar until crumbly.
  2. Gradually add the cold water, mixing until a dough forms.
  3. Divide the dough in half, shape into rectangles, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Roll out one dough rectangle on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into rectangles.
  6. Place a spoonful of jam in the center of half the rectangles, then top with remaining rectangles. Seal the edges with a fork.
  7. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  8. Beat the egg and brush on top of each Pop Tart.
  9. Bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  10. Let cool and drizzle with powdered sugar icing if desired.

Notes

For an extra touch, press down the edges of the pop tarts with a fork for a professional look. Experiment with various jams and fillings for unique flavors.
