Description

Delicious homemade bagels that are fluffy on the inside and have a shiny crust, perfect for brunch or breakfast.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon malt syrup (optional)
  • Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar; sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces; form each piece into a bagel shape.
  7. Bring a large pot of water to boil; boil bagels for about 1 minute on each side.
  8. Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and sprinkle with toppings.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Allow cooling on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Store leftover bagels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Freeze for longer storage.
