Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1 tablespoon malt syrup (optional)
- Toppings (sesame seeds, poppy seeds, etc.)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast by combining warm water and sugar; sprinkle yeast over the top and let sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture, and mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces; form each piece into a bagel shape.
- Bring a large pot of water to boil; boil bagels for about 1 minute on each side.
- Place boiled bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and sprinkle with toppings.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Allow cooling on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
Store leftover bagels in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Freeze for longer storage.
